Acting on feedback and suggestions, we:

  • created & launched "Lite Hikes," a new category of hikes in our hike challenge rating system.

  • conceptualized & launched OASC Recurring Adventures, with the help of many other Leaders - thank you!

  • are working on numerous club enhancement projects, including more club events to volunteer for other community organizations, and creating the ability for us to welcome children on some adventures.

Frequently Asked Questions

(click question for answer)

Q: How old are club members?

We have members in their 20s through 70s. Once the outdoor interests are there, age differences dissolve.

Q: Is this a singles-only club?

No.  The club has singles, couples, and spouses (in the situation where the other spouse is too busy to join) as members.  Non-student couples may receive a nice Couples Discount.

Q:  What is "Ageless Adventurers?"

Ageless Adventurers are OASC members who enjoy the company of great people their own age at OASC Ageless Adventurer Member Socials (pictures from just a few Ageless Adventurer Member Socials), in addition to enjoying interesting conversations and friendships across generations at other OASC events.

Q: I'm worried that a hike will be too hard for me -- how do I know if I can do it?

OASC has a Hike Challenge Rating System to help members choose hikes that are right for their fitness levels and desired experience.

The Hike Challenge Rating System takes into account:
1)Distance
2)Total Elevation Gain
3)Technical Challenge
4)Pace

OASC also offers Lite Hikes, defined as:
Distance: max. 5 miles (whether wilderness, rural, or urban)
Total Elevation Gain: max. 500 feet
Technical Challenge: (-) minus
Pace: max. 2.0 out of 5

Q: Can I try out a single OASC adventure before becoming a member, to see what it's like?

No (with the exception of Group Charters).  Simple things such as cloudy or rainy weather can make an adventure not as enjoyable as it otherwise would be, and we don't want you to pass judgment on the club as a whole based on that one experience.  We do, however, offer one-month and three-month memberships which will give you a good taste for what OASC is like.

However, groups can and do group charter adventures with us without being club members.

Q: How do I find out about upcoming adventure details and sign-ups?

By clicking "Join OASC now!" you will create an online account in our members-only website (accessed by clicking "Member Login" above).  The members-only website presents comprehensive adventure details including destination, meeting location, start and end times, itinerary, what to bring and what the club will provide, etc.  After viewing the details, to sign up for an adventure you simply click "Join."  The website will ask you questions (such as whether or not you want the club to provide you with a sleeping bag, if the adventure involves camping) as appropriate, and the Leader will plan accordingly.  There are no meetings to attend to find out what is coming up; everything is presented electronically in a user-friendly fashion.

Q: Is there a bulletin board?

Yes!  Members gain access to the OASC Electronic Bulletin Board, providing numerous valuable resources.

Q: Can I bring my kids along?

Currently, one must be age 18 or older to join OASC activities.  There is a babysitting swap section on the OASC Electronic Bulletin Board, enabling you to exchange the service of having other friendly members with kids watch yours when needed, and vice versa.  If we allow children to join, our leaders will have to focus much attention on the children's safety -- making it more challenging to provide for the safety of the adult participants.  Club management currently is in the process of developing a system which will welcome kids on some adventures.  If you're interested in attending adventures with your child(ren), please let us know so we can keep you informed.  Thanks!

Q: I am a member and I have a guest coming in from out of town. Can s/he join me on an OASC adventure?

Yes!  If your guest lives more than 60 miles away from Charlottesville  (as measured by clicking "Driving Directions" at www.mapquest.com), then for an extra fee s/he can join any OASC activity.  The fee is $5 for each calendar day the trip is held.

Q: Can I bring along my doggie?

The vast majority of our members love pets and would love to meet your doggy, who will brighten everyone's day!  In accordance with park regulations and for the comfort and safety of all, if your dog never ever bites, yes s/he can come along on a day hike on a 6-foot leash if allowed at the hiking location, if the Leader isn't serving food, if you drive, and if you ask the Leader well in advance.  For some activities you don't have to ask, as those are specially designed to welcome great pet-owners like yourself and doggies.

Q: I will be out of state for two months -- can you extend my membership?

Yes!  If you will be out of Virginia for 30 days or longer, we will extend your membership by the number of days you'll be gone.  Happy travels!

Q: Is a 1-month membership tied to a calendar month?

No.  For example, if you join on the 18th of the month, then your membership will be valid until the 18th of the next month.

Q: Can I join the club for a different amount of time (i.e. not one of the standard membership plans)?

Yes -- at the time of joining, just choose and extend any plan using that plan's equivalent monthly rate.

Example 1 (non-students):  to join for 9 months, take the monthly rate of the 6-month plan, multiply by 9, pay that amount, and include a simple note saying that this what you are doing.

Example 2 (students):  to join for a semester plus 2 months, simply take the monthly rate of the semester plan and add two months payment to the semester rate.  Include a simple note saying that this is what you would like.  Students also please note that you are welcome to choose a non-student membership plan.

Q: Can I give the gift of club memberships?

Yes, we offer gift certificates.

Q: Can I meet with the club manager?

Absolutely!  Please contact us to make an appointment, and note the location and directions.
