For Central Virginia residents looking to enjoy the outdoors this
summer and meet new people doing it, the Outdoor Adventure Social Club
might be just the thing.
The club, which recently topped 100 members, offers residents a fun
way to get outside with people who share their interests as well as a
team of adventure leaders ready to help them explore new outdoor
activities.
“There’s just something about the outdoors,” said Matt Rosefsky, a
former University of Virginia student who founded the club earlier
this year.
After co-founding Outdoors at UVa, a 300-plus member group that
gives students a chance to get outdoors with classmates who share
their love for the wilderness, Rosefsky decided to start a similar
club for the Charlottesville community.
“I co-founded Outdoors at UVa and absolutely loved everything I did
there,” he explained. “I wanted to create a fun way for people with
similar interests to meet while enjoying the great outdoors.”
Club activities include hiking, kayaking and biking, as well as
poetry readings, potluck dinners and go-karting. Members also receive
discounts from local outdoor adventure stores such as Blue Ridge
Mountain Sports and Ragged Mountain Running Shop. In addition, members
get access to outdoor gear and guidance from other members and
instructors.
The group will hold an information session and photo show at 8 p.m.
Friday at 420 E. Main St. Membership fees range from $12.50 to $29.50
per month, depending on membership length and other factors.
Club leaders include Bev Richardson, a caver who recently rappelled
186 feet into the depths of the earth. All adventure leaders are
trained in first aid.
“I think there are a lot of people out there who have outdoor
interests but there’s really no easy way to pursue them. The club
provides introductory and more advanced adventures on a silver
platter,” Rosefsky said. The club’s schedule is stocked full of
activities for this month, and Rosefsky has big plans for the future,
including a possible club trip to Vietnam this winter.
As much as he loves wilderness adventures, not every expedition
Rosefsky leads is into the great outdoors. Recently, instead of
climbing a mountain or hitting the trails, he and fellow club members
stormed Ben & Jerry’s to conquer the “Vermonster,” a 20-scoop ice
cream sundae that he said they overcame “with ease.”
“I’ve met so many interesting and incredibly nice people,”
Richardson said. “It’s just amazing how much fun we have when we get
together.”
