It feels like spring - let's go out and play. This feeling echoes
through young and old alike at this time of year.
If you do like the outdoors, this is a particularly good time of
year to check out the Outdoor Adventure Social Club. Now 240 members
strong, this club, which is celebrating its fourth anniversary this
month, features loads of activities - outside and inside.
Matt Rosefsky, club manager and founder of the Outdoor Adventure
Social Club, said there were 966 different adventure activities in
2007. The club hosts two to three activities every day, with more than
30 members leading the activities.
The club presents outdoor adventures, social activities and
community service activities.
"There's a huge variety of activities," Rosefsky said.
These include hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, wine
tastings, attending concerts, ballroom dancing, miniature golf,
Frisbee golf and going to the movies, just to name a few.
The club also volunteers at an animal refuge, builds for Habitat
for Humanity and has raised almost $12,000 for local charities.
"Our growth comes back to the reason I created the club," Rosefsky
said. "I heard so many people say that it's so hard to meet people in
Charlottesville. This is a low-pressure way to meet people. You go do
the activity. You meet people with similar interests."
It may sound like a singles club, but it's not. According to
Rosefsky, there are members who are single, couples and members who
join when their significant others either don't like outdoor
activities or are too busy. And, the ages of club members run from 20s
to 70s.
Since it is spring, there are lots of hikes coming up, and it's "a
great time to enjoy the wildflowers," Rosefsky pointed out. There's
also the big trip they take every year to West Virginia for whitewater
rafting, horseback trail riding and hiking. The trip is May 3 and 4
and 20 people have signed up. Rosefsky said there is still room for
more.
He also pointed out that being part of a larger group helps bring
discounts for some activities.
"We always strive to do our best to get group discounts and pass it
on to the members. In this trip, each member is saving $68 on
rafting," Rosefsky said.
It does cost to join the Outdoor Adventure Social Club. You can
sign up for one of several options. It can cost anywhere from $14 to
$32 a month, depending on how long you join. The one-month membership
is $32.
"For the cost of one dinner out, you gain access to a whole month
of activities," Rosefsky said.
If you aren't sure yet, you always can attend the information
session and open house.
The next one is 8 p.m. April 11 in the club social space on the
Charlottesville Historic Downtown Mall. There, you can watch a
slide-show presentation and meet other folks.
Beginners and novices should not worry - the club provides gear and
instruction so beginner participants are welcome, Rosefsky said. They
even rate their hikes so people know what level they are and can
choose accordingly.
Rosefsky believes that the growth of the club is also a sign of the
times.
"A lot of people are not comfortable out in the wilderness alone,"
Rosefsky said. "This is so sad. There are so many tragic events that
we read about. It's terrifying and terrible that it's come to this -
that people don't feel they can go out in the wilderness."
In the interest of safety, Rosefsky has become a wilderness EMT and
is a certified wilderness first aid instructor. He teaches wilderness
first aid once a season, a class that is open to the public. The next
one is scheduled for April 12 and 13.
In its growth, the club has added some new features. One is the
"Ageless Adventures." These are defined as activities for more mature
members ? and mature is not defined by any particular age, Rosefsky
said. Also, the club has offered group charters. For example, Scouts,
churches, businesses and others can contact the club to provide an
adventure.
There are new features on the club Web site as well. Any member can
post a social activity and invite others to join him or her. This
option "empowers members," Rosefsky said. Also on the Web site, there
is an electronic bulletin board where members can find information,
listings for jobs, and to connect with other members.
